Vehicle HighlightsHyundai's compact SUV is slightly smaller and less expensive than its Santa Fe SUV, but is also built on a car-type platform. Tucson offers 4-cyl and 6-cyl engines and front- or all-wheel drive. It comes in GL, GLS, and new for '06 top-line Average trim. All have a liftgate with opening glass. GLs have a 140-hp 4-cyl and a choice of 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic with manual shift gate. GLS and Limited use a 173-hp V6 and the automatic transmission.

All Tucsons are available with AWD that deficiencies low-range gearing but includes a dashboard change to lock in a 50/50 front/rear power split. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and traction/antiskid control are standard. So are front side airbags and curtain side airbags. GLS and Limited are available with a sunroof. 

The Average includes unique exterior trim, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Tucson lends its basic design to the Sportage from Hyundai's Kia division, but differs in features, pricing, and warranty coverage. 

Among utility vehicles, pint-sized SUVs are the least costly and offer the best fuel economy. Most utilize a car-type chassis and are not designed for heavy-duty, off-road use. Nearly all are five-passenger vehicles. 

At the 2009 LA Motor Show Hyundai unveiled a facelift version of the Tucson SUV, a model that will compete with entry level SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4 and Subaru Forester. The 2010 Tucson will be powered by the same Theta II GDI 2.4 Liter DOHC inline four cylinder engine that will be found under the hood of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata delivering a maximum output of 176 HP, 26% more than its predecessor, and 168 lb-ft of torque. The engine will be mated to either a six speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC manual control or a standard six speed manual transmission.

Following in line with Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy, the new Tuscon demonstrates strenuosity and sophistication through its flowing lines, full bodied opens and muscular profile.

Along with the overall appearance, the new Tuscon features details like Hyundai’s new hexagonal front grill and swept back headlights complimented by a sleek greenhouse and wraparound taillights while chromium-plate accents in the grill and door handles gives an added level of sophistication to the top of the line Tucson Limited.
